Assistant Professor of Computer Science (Tenure Track) at the University of Vermont
We are hiring a new tenure track position in computer science at the University of Vermont. Areas of interest include but are not limited to cybersecurity, data privacy, trustworthy AI, and adversarial machine learning.
The Department of Computer Science at the University of Vermont (UVM) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2025. Areas of interest include but are not limited to cybersecurity, data privacy, trustworthy AI, and adversarial machine learning. Ideal applicants would show strong potential for transdisciplinary collaboration across campus in fields such as complex systems, cybersecurity, data privacy, engineering, environmental science, social sciences, and health sciences.
The Department of Computer Science is a growing research hub within the University with vibrant research including complex systems, security & privacy, formal methods, computational social science, and AI/ML. The department is associated with UVM’s Complex Systems Center and Center for Computer Security and Privacy, both of which are home to interdisciplinary research efforts supported by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, DARPA, and corporate sponsors including MassMutual, Google, and Amazon. The department encourages and invests in research excellence among junior faculty, and two department members received NSF CAREER awards in 2023. The department has a rapidly growing graduate program, with the number of PhD students tripling since 2018.
Responsibilities
Faculty hired into this position are expected to build an independent research program that attracts external funding, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in computer science (including curriculum development), supervise Ph.D. and M.S. theses, advise undergraduate students, and participate in service to the department, university, and discipline.
Qualifications
The applicant must have a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related field by the start date. Competitive applicants should possess:
- A track record of research excellence as appropriate to their seniority and the potential to build a sustainable long-term research agenda.
- Demonstrated expertise or evident potential for outstanding teaching in computing field, at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
- The ability to increase UVM Computer Science’s research profile by building on existing strengths, forging new collaborations, and mentoring graduate students.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including during research talks, discussions with students and colleagues, in scholarly work, and in public outreach.
- A strong commitment to embrace and advance the values of UVM’s Our Common Ground: Openness, Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Innovation, and Justice.
